SPRINGVALE has a feast of affordable fresh meat, seafood, fruit and vegetables.
And according to the Springvale Asian Business Association (SABA), it is Melbourne's best-kept secret.
``It's become a place to go for cheap groceries, cheap eats,'' SABA vice-president Frankie Chen said.
``Within 20 steps you've walked past 10 restaurants and five grocery shops.''
SABA president Tom Hyunh said people flock from all over Melbourne to Springvale due to its concentration of Asian specialty retailers and low-cost car parking.
The market is so popular that two shopping tours ``Vietnam on a Plate'' and ``Sri Lankan Flavours'' visit the area monthly.
Mr Chen said Springvale's status had grown by ``word of mouth'' rather than any great promotional push.
``It's probably the beauty of it,'' he said. ``It's Melbourne's best-kept secret.
``It's got this atmosphere. It's very real, it's not a pretentious environment.''
Lying behind the buzz of trade, the shopping district acted as a meeting point for the area's Asian residents, Mr Chen said.
Each day, a group meets to play Chinese chess inside the Springvale shopping centre.
``It's a big community, they get to socialise down here,'' Mr Chen said.
``It's grown into a cultural hub.''

Hi Vicki & Glen
I would just like to thank you for your hospitality the other day when the students and myself attended your Springvale Market Tour. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it and it was talked about for quite a while afterwards. The professionalism you both displayed was very impressive and shows how passionate you are about the area and Asian food. Coming from a fairly remote, country town it is good for our students to see 'how the other half live' and what is available in other areas.
Once again many thanks for the time you dedicated to the tour and you flexibility with the timeframes, it was an excellent start to out 2 day excursion, we shall definitely be in touch next year when we plan it again. I have mentioned it to a few staff members and it could be on the list for a professional development day!
Regards
Martin
